First off Big Al isn't me... well sort of. You see it all started years ago in a factory in southeast Indiana. Big Al was my dad. A larger than life man who gave me the name I use today. Then, 38 years later, my mom marries another big Al. Call it coincidence, happenstance, or just plain fate. I call it divine intervention. These men, along with the many family members who support me, are the  reason I am who I am today. My name is John Allen and I am the owner  and operator of Big Alz BBQ. Food has always been a passion of mine. Since I was a young child, you could always find me in the kitchen with a spoon or spatula in my hand. Some of my earliest memories were standing next to my mom or Grandma watching, learning, and tasting. This simple interest soon became a passion. From fast food to fine dining; I have done it all and loved every minute of it. At the ripe old age of 35 I dipped my toe into the BBQ waters. From the first lighting of the pit, I was hooked. The smell of smoke. The dark mahogany color. That first smoky bite as it hits your lips. All of these are reasons why I have decided to take my passion to the next level. I want to share that passion with you.
